2 cups all-purpose flour

2 cups granulated sugar

1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

1 tsp baking soda

1/4 tsp salt

3/4 cup buttermilk

1 cup water

2 tsp vanilla extract

2 cups unsalted butter, softened

1 (16-ounce) package confectioners’ sugar

1/2 cup toasted pecans, chopped

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch cake pans.

In a large bowl, beat the eggs until light and frothy.

In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.

Add the dry ingredients to the eggs in the large bowl and mix until just combined.

Add the buttermilk, water, and vanilla extract to the batter and mix until well combined.

Divide the batter evenly between the two prepared cake pans.

Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of each cake comes out clean.

Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes before removing them and transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

In a large bowl, beat the butter until light and fluffy. Gradually add the confectioners’ sugar and continue beating until the frosting is smooth.

Spread a layer of frosting on top of one cake, then place the other cake on top. Spread the remaining frosting over the top and sides of the cake.

Sprinkle the toasted pecans over the top of the cake.

Chill the cake in the refrigerator for 30 minutes before serving.
